This 6 hour workshop focuses on increasing academic English language for American Indian students through engaging academic conversations.

Presenter: Tim Blackburn, Education Northwest
Tim Blackburn spent the early years of his career as a high school ESL teacher and bilingual educator in the Bronx. In addition, Mr. Blackburn taught ESL and Global History at International Community High School, one of New York City's 12 newcomer high schools. It was this experience that impressed the importance of integrating language and content as well as creating the space for meaningful student collaboration. Tim is a biliterate educator in Spanish and English. He currently serves as a Senior Advisor at Education Northwest in Portland, Oregon.

- Learn and explore the concept of student apprenticeship within subject-specific contexts.
- Understand how to use of the WIDA English language standards as a tool for differentiating integrated supports (scaffolds) based on student proficiency in language, literacy, and academic content.
- Gain instructional strategies (with an emphasis on student academic conversations) that integrate the College and Career Readiness Standards.
- Engage in mutual collaborative practice in adapting and applying model instructional strategies.

FUNDING ResourcesNeed funding support for registration and/or travel expenses? The Office of Public Instruction is providing funding opportunities for Title III educators interested in attending this professional learning opportunity. Districts and/or individuals can apply to be reimbursed for the registration fee ($75), lodging (at the state rate) and for some mileage with the total for all three reimbursements being $500 or less. The application is due to OPI by April 1, 2016.
